Cuba defeats Trinidad & Tobago in a fast match

TIJUANA, Mexico, July 6, 2010 – Cuba debuted in the NORCECA Women’s Junior Championship with an easy 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-13) win over Trinidad & Tobago in Pool B. The Cubans, who enjoyed advantages of 10-3 in blocks and 14-6 in serves, are tied with Puerto Rico and will clash on Wednesday for the pool’s supremacy while the Trinidadians dropped to 0-2 record.

Cuban Sulian Matienzo compiled three aces and two blocks en route to 12 points while Yunieska Robles added 12 points also. Regla Gracia notched 10 points including four blocks.

“We went out on this match to finish fast”, stated Robles. For the Cuban Coach, Wilfredo Robinson, the key was on the service and reception. “We worked on that, we haven’t had as many preparation matches as we wanted to, but the girls did a great job”.

The last set was the best for the Trinidadians, when they surpassed the 10 points, and even though they struggled, this was an experience to learn. “It is part of our process, playing against Cuba is always a big experience, because they have a great level and in this kind of matches is when you learn a lot”, sail MacSood Ali, coach of Trinidad and Tobago.
